EMS Handbook: Council

2.1.4 Executive Committee member nomination rules

  • In November/December in the year preceding the Council the Executive Committee sets up a Nomination Committee of five individual members of the EMS with a reasonable balance of mathematical field, geographical region, and gender, to identify well-qualified candidates for the currently open EC positions (President, Vice-Presidents, Secretary, Treasurer, and Members-at-Large). The EMS Secretariat sends a call to the EMS members, to representatives of EMYA and to EMS-TAGs to suggest candidates for the election and forwards the received suggestions to the Nomination Committee. From these suggestions, and any others of its own, the Nomination Committee shall select a short-list of top candidates, and forward them to the Council for election.
  • The suggestions for Vice-Presidents, Secretary and Members-at-Large positions can overlap.
  • EC candidates must submit the following set of candidacy documents to be included in the Council papers):
    • one or two pages for candidate's statement,
    • two pages for a CV (with possible link to a more extensive version),
    • one page for an official support letter from their society (optional).
  • Candidates for election may also be suggested directly from the floor at the Council meeting.
  • The EC candidates shall briefly present themselves at the EMS Council.
  • The President is elected for a maximum of one term of 4 years. The total number of the service years in the EC cannot exceed 12 years (maximum of 8 years of service as a committee member combined with four years of presidency).
  • For practical reasons (knowledge of the language), the Treasurer is traditionally a colleague from Finland and the EC solicits potential candidates.
