EMS Handbook: Council

2.1.4 Executive Committee member nomination rules

  • In November/December in the year preceding the Council the EMS Secretariat sends a call to the EMS members to nominate candidates for the currently open EC positions (President, Vice-Presidents, Secretary, Treasurer, and Members-at-Large). The current EC can also make suggestions. Deadline: 11 days before the spring EC meeting, usually March.
  • The suggestions for Vice-President, Secretary and Members-at-Large positions can overlap.
  • EC candidates must submit the following set of candidacy documents before the deadline (the documents must be included in the Council papers):
    • one or two pages for a statement,
    • two pages for a CV (they can select any related information and add links of their choice),
    • one page for an official support letter from their society.
  • The EC candidate must present himself / herself at the EMS Council (2–3 minute presentation).
  • The President is elected for a maximum of one term of 4 years. The total number of the service years in the EC cannot exceed 12 years (maximum of 8 years of service as a committee member combined with four years of presidency).
  • About halfway through his term the President starts, by installing a Nomination Committee, a search for the next President. The EC discusses potential candidates and the President approaches them for their willingness to serve.
  • The Treasurer is traditionally a colleague from Finland and the EC solicits potential candidates.
