MOSS: the Mathematics Online Seminar Series by EMYA
EMYA, the EMS Young Academy, is launching a new initiative: MOSS, the Mathematics Online Seminar Series, from February 2025 onwards. It is organized by Jelena Jankov Pavlović (University of Osijek, Croatia) and Cristina Molero-Río (École Polytechnique, France).
This series includes presentations from leading young academics in the field of Mathematics from around the globe. It is primarily intended to inspire the upcoming generation of young mathematicians - those who are working towards or have just completed a PhD in Mathematics, no matter the field. However, it will also be relevant to senior mathematicians interested in other areas since the seminars will be presented in a way that are accessible to a broad audience.
«We wanted to help young mathematicians integrate into the mathematical community and, if they haven't done so yet, find the area they want to work in», said Jelena, one of the organizers. «This really aligns with the goals of EMYA, since its primary purpose is to strengthen the role and perspective of the young generation of mathematicians in Europe. By inviting excellent young mathematicians like Cristiana De Filippis as our first speaker, we also want to increase their motivation.»
«This initiative started during one of our EMYA monthly meetings, where all members share news or ideas. We were thinking of creating some activities that could benefit the community,» added Christina. «Having a series of online seminars where excellent young mathematicians could share their research in an informative way sounded nice. This is interesting for a wide public. As an anecdote, where I did my PhD, at the University of Seville, we had a similar format: PhD students in Mathematics shared among them their research informatively, and nice interdisciplinary discussions arose. That is what I expect from this, but at a higher scale. I also had experience in organizing this kind of 100% online meetings, so these two reasons made me get involved totally in the idea.»
The seminars will be held online via Zoom on the first Thursday of each month at 4 p.m. (CET), lasting approximately 45 minutes, followed by a 15 minute Q&A. Shortly after each seminar, the video recording will be available at the EMS YouTube channel. If you would like to receive updates from us, please follow this link to register to this mailing list. The upcoming speakers will include:
- Cristiana De Filippis (University of Parma), on February 6
- Thomas Hutchcroft (California Institute of Technology), on March 6
- Adam Kanigowski (University of Maryland and Jagiellonian University), on April 3
- Jessica Fintzen (Universität Bonn and Duke University), on May 8
- Richard Montgomery (University of Warwick) on June 5
Stay tuned! We are looking forward to e-seeing you!
