European Mathematical Society statement on academic freedom
The European Mathematical Society holds deep conviction in the importance of science, and mathematics in particular, for the modern world.

Scientific discoveries assure technological progress and lead to the development of solutions to a variety of social, environmental and economic problems, improving the lives of current and future generations. Mathematics continues to provide the foundation for scientific advances and new concepts for scientific and technological development. Freedom and openness in scientific research has again and again proved to be absolutely crucial, allowing us to fully realise the potential and talent of people of all backgrounds and experiences. To sustain the unquestionable success of science as a driver of modern society we stress the utmost importance of
- Stable and adequate funding for science and education
- Academic freedom and independence of universities
- The free exchange of ideas and mobility of researchers
The European Mathematical Society sees these principles currently being challenged, including in places that have previously been champions of these ideals. We express our solidarity with researchers across the world and encourage all governments, politicians, and science stakeholders, including, of course, in Europe and the United States, to adhere to and fight for these values.
