European Mathematical Society expresses concern for Professor Mikhail Volkov
The European Mathematical Society (EMS) is disturbed and saddened to hear that Professor Mikhail Volkov of the Ural Federal University has been suddenly retired from his position, is not able to travel freely, and is in poor health.

Professor Volkov is held in the great esteem by the international mathematical community. He is a mathematician of the highest calibre, contributing seminal results to several fields of algebra and theoretical computer science. More than this, Professor Volkov is a renowned scholar, a wonderful source of knowledge, and a bridge between the Russian school and other European and international centres of excellence.
Many of us in the EMS have been fortunate enough to meet Professor Volkov at international conferences, to listen to his wonderfully lucid and informative research talks, to collaborate with him, and to work with him on editorial boards. Professor Volkov is entirely devoted to his academic endeavours, including the support of numerous students and early career researchers. The EMS asks that Professor Volkov be able to continue his work for the mathematical community, and that he be allowed to travel freely in Russia and beyond for the purpose of attending conferences and conducting collaborative research. In this way he can continue as an ambassador for Russian mathematics.
