29th Nordic Congress of Mathematicians

The 29th Nordic Congress of Mathematicians, in collaboration with the EMS, will be held in Aalborg (Denmark) 3-7 July 2023. Click through (link) for the list of eminent plenary speakers and a wide range of special sessions. Early bird registration, with a discount for personal EMS members, is possible until 31 March 2023.

EMS Call for Large Events

The EMS has announced a new call for large-scale scientific events, such as special semesters, interdisciplinary study groups, and large showcase events. This call has four deadlines per year: 1st February, 1st May, 1st September, 1st December. Proposals can apply for up to EUR 25K of funding, with one proposal being funded per quarter.   • New project, STEAME-Students: European Networking of STEAME School Students for Exchange and Co-creation. The project will develop a European Online Student Creations Exchange Forum and a European Network Community of STEAME School Students. More information (link).

  • Year 2023, 40 years Anniversary of the Cyprus Mathematical Society. A series of events will be announced in January 2023.

Czech Mathematical Society

The Czech Mathematical Society has awarded the Honorary Medals for Mathematics to Andrea Cianchi (Università degli Studi di Firenze) for his long-term contribution to the collaboration between Czech and Italian mathematicians; to Pavel Drábek (University of West Bohemia in Pilsen) for his outstanding scientific results and his merits in the development of mathematics and mathematical education in the Czech Republic; to Jana Kopfová (Silesian University in Opava) for her tireless work with young mathematicians and popularization of mathematics in the public; to Mirko Rokyta (Charles University in Prague) for his lifelong contributions to the development and popularization of mathematics in the Czech Republic.

Institut Henri Poincaré (IHP, France)

  1. The institute has released a video presentation available on Youtube (link).

  2. Two six-week and two three-month thematic programmes will take place at IHP in 2023:

  1. IHP welcomes applications to scientific programmes in mathematics, physics, computer science, or at the interface with related fields (biology, climatology, neuroscience, etc). More information (link).

  2. The IHP maths museum called Maison Poincaré (link) is due to open in 2023 thanks to public and private funding (link). It will offer in particular to its public the Holo-Math (link) experience supported by European funds.

Committee of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences

The Stefan Banach Medal for outstanding achievements in mathematical sciences in 2022 was awarded by the Polish Academy of Sciences to Michel Talagrand. The Medal was established in 1992 on the centenary of Stefan Banach's birth.

CIM (Centro Internacional de Matemática, Portugal)

The Pedro Nunes' Lecture 2022 was held on 16th November 2022 with Invited Speaker Sylvia Serfaty (New York University, USA). More information (link).

Royal Spanish Mathematical Society (RSME)

  • Prof. Antonio Ros Mulero (Department of Geometry and Topology, University of Granada, Spain) has been awarded the “Julio Rey Pastor” Spanish national research prize for research in Mathematics for 2022. More information (link).

  • Call for applications José Luis Rubio de Francia prize 2022. The JLRF (José Luis Rubio de Francia) prize is awarded by the RSME, and sponsored by the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and the Universidad de Zaragoza. The prize is intended to recognize and encourage young mathematicians (under the age of 32). The deadline for applications is December 31, 2022, 18:00 CET. More information (link).

Basque Centre for Applied Mathematics (BCAM)

The Basque Centre for Applied Mathematics has been awarded the third Severo Ochoa accreditation of excellence. These accreditations are awarded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation in a competitive call. BCAM is the first Basque research centre to receive the third consecutive accreditation and joins the 12 Spanish institutions that have achieved this milestone. More information (link).

Spanish Society of Applied Mathematics (SeMA)

Leonardo Scholarships awarded to Researchers in the area of Mathematics. The BBVA Foundation Leonardo Scholarships for Cultural Researchers and Creators are intended to support personal projects of cultural researchers and creators between 30 and 45 years of age, with up to 40,000 euros for a period of between 12 and 18 months. In the 2022 call and in the area of Mathematics, 5 scholarships have been awarded, one of them has been Jezabel Curbelo Hernández, premio SeMA Joven Investigador de 2020, hired Ramón y Cajal at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, with the project "Detecting structures coherent lagrangians in geophysical flows". London Mathematical Socity

  • Solidarity for Mathematicians. The London Mathematical Society and Isaac Newton Institute have received funding to support a further 20 mathematicians seeking refuge in the UK, as part of the Solidary Grants programme which was launched earlier this year. See details and apply at this link.

  • LMS Prizes. Nominations for LMS Prizes in 2023 are now open. The deadline is 8 January 2023; see details at this link. Certificates for the prize winners in 2022, which include Professor Sir John Ball, who won the De Morgan Medal, were awarded at the LMS Annual General Meeting on 18 November.   • LMS Honorary Members 2022. The LMS has elected Professor Jennifer Tour Chayes (University of California, Berkeley) and Professor Vladimir Drinfeld (University of Chicago, Illinois) to be Honorary Members of the Society in 2022. See details at this link.

European Society for Mathematical and Theoretical Biology (ESMTB)

  • The ESMTB on-line colloquium continues, it is held the last wednesday every month at 1pm (ECT). More information (link).

  • Next European Conference in Mathematical and Theoretical Biology (ECMTB2024) will take place in Toledo, Spain, July 19)24, 2024.

  • ECMTB2022 (the 12th conference of the series) took place in Heidelberg, Germany, between 19 and 23 September 2022 and was a joint event with the Society for Mathematical Biology. It was a large scientific meeting with over 740 participants from more than 40 countries. Virtual participation was also possible, and online participants were able to follow all plenary talks and oral presentations as well as submit online posters.

EMS COMMITTEES

Applications and Interdisciplinary Relations (CAIR)

  • CAIR has organised an ERC (European Research Council) information session about PE1, featuring recent ERC grantees and a talk by Maria Gonzalez from the ERC, at the Equadiff conference in Brno in July this year. More information (link).

  • A similar event is planned for the SIAM CSE meeting in Amsterdam in March 2023. More information (link).

  • CAIR would also like to highlight a couple of news from its close collaboration partner ECMI (European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry) who celebrated 35 years of existence this year. The 22nd ECMI conference on industrial and applied mathematics will be held in Wrocław, Poland, 26-30 June 2023. The submission of talks is open and more details are available at www.ecmi2023.org and ECMI is looking forward to contributions! Moreover, the Mathematical Modelling Week, a traditional yearly event for master students, is scheduled for 16-20 July 2023 in Szeged, Hungary.

Education

AKSF ASSOCIATION 30th Anniversary Article. Mathematical Kangaroo, the largest international mathematical competition, celebrates its 30th anniversary. The article gives an insight into the foundations of the competition and evolution of the Association Kangourou Sans Frontières, and discusses many current developments and challenges. ERCOM (Scientific Directors and Administrators of European Research Centres in the Mathematical Sciences)

  1. IMAR (Simion Stoilov Institute of the Romanian Academy of Sciences) in Bucharest was accepted as a new member of ERCOM, in response to a submitted application and a positive outcome of the vote of the ERCOM members.

  2. The next meeting of ERCOM will take place in the Institute of Mathematics of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague on the 24th-25th March 2022.

MISCELLANEA

Heidelberg Laureate Forum

Calling Outstanding Young Researchers - Apply now for the 10th Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF), September 24-29, 2023! The Heidelberg Laureate Forum Foundation encourages young researchers in mathematics and computer science from all over the world to apply for one of the 200 coveted spots. The application period runs until 11 February 2023. The HLF offers all accepted young researchers the opportunity to personally interact with the laureates of the most prestigious prizes in the fields of mathematics and computer science. During the last week in September, the recipients of the Abel Prize, the ACM A.M. Turing Award, the ACM Prize in Computing, the Fields Medal, the IMU Abacus Medal and the Nevanlinna Prize engage in a cross-generational scientific dialogue with young researchers in Heidelberg, Germany. News from the International day of Mathematics (IDM)

The theme for the 2023 International Day of Mathematics, on March 14 2023 is "Mathematics for Everyone". Preparations are underway and will include the following:

  • The opening of the event world map in December 2022
  • The announcement of a new global challenge in January 2023
  • A new activity on street math in our section "Organize an Event"
  • A list of projects on the theme "Mathematics for Everyone"
  • An IDM teacher training program in Mozambique supported by the Simons Foundation
