Postdoctoral scholarship (2 years) in spatial statistics

Postdoctoral scholarship (2 years) in spatial statistics, Umeå university | Umeå, Sweden

Classification: Spatial statistics

Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics at Umeå University is offering a postdoctoral scholarship within the project “Functional- and point process-based approaches for trajectory data analysis”. The scholarship is full-time for two years, starting September 1, 2023, or upon agreement. Last day to apply is March 31, 2023. Project description: Spatial data sometimes come as a set of points, which are (ir)regularly distributed over a region of space, representing the location of events/things such as traffic accidents, crimes, earthquakes, etc. In practice, one usually deals with a single observed pattern or a collection of patterns which are considered to have been (independently) generated from the same process. However, modern data collection techniques allow tracking moving objects (e.g., cars, human beings, bicycles, animals) continuously. This means that we not only know the current location of a moving object, but also track such objects over time. Therefore, one deals with a set of curves, representing paths/routes taken by moving objects, which is called a trajectory pattern. The main aim of this project is to develop functional- and point process-based approaches for analyzing trajectory patterns. The developed approaches are expected to be accompanied by open-access codes/software. The successful candidate will be based at the Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics in Umeå and will be financed through a personal scholarship from the Kempe Foundations. The two-year scholarship will start from September 1, 2023, or upon agreement. The stipend is given 28 000 SEK/month (net). Qualification: To qualify as a postdoctoral scholarship holder, the postdoctoral fellow is required to have completed a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a doctoral degree. This qualification requirement must be fulfilled no later than the date a decision will be made about scholarship recipient. If there are special reasons, candidates who completed their doctoral degree prior to that may also be eligible. Special reasons include absence due to illness, parental leave, appointments of trust in trade union organizations, military service, or similar circumstances, as well as clinical practice or other forms of appointment/assignment relevant to the subject area. The doctoral degree should be within a relevant field such as mathematics/statistics, no later than the date a decision will be made about scholarship recipient. Further requirements are documented knowledge in spatial statistics, with particular attention given to point process analysis, and excellent programming skills in R. Experience in other related fields such as machine/deep learning and skills in other programming languages will be considered meriting. Further, a candidate should have both good collaborative skills and ability to work independently. Good knowledge of oral and written English is also required.
