Postdoc position in Analysis

UCLouvain | Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium

Classification: Analysis and its Applications

Applications are invited for a two-year postdoctoral position at the Research Institute in Mathematics and Physics (IRMP) at UCLouvain. The position will be funded by the Belgian research fund F.R.S.-FNRS as part of the project "Zone of Shear Transformation for Engineering (ZESTE)". The successful candidate will work on the mathematical aspects of this interdisciplinary project. Applicants should hold a PhD in Mathematics, and have some working experience in PDE, calculus of variations and/or numerical analysis. Experience with numerical implementation is an advantage, but not a requirement. Project description: Shear Transformation Zones (STZ) are a modeling device that is widely used in engineering, but poorly understood from a mathematical point of view. STZ based algorithms predict plastic deformation based on iterative finite element solutions, updating the plastic strain (also called "eigenstrain") from step to step. The aim of the mathematical part of the project is to give a sound mathematical underpinning in the form of an asymptotic analysis of the model behavior for vanishing time step and grid size. The call is open until the position is filled. Applications received by September 30 will receive full consideration. Applications should be sent to heiner.olbermann@uclouvain.be and should include the following information/documents: Curriculum Vitae List of publications Research statement Names and email addresses of two references Please use the subject line "Application ZESTE". For further information, write to the email address above.
