PhD position in pure Mathematics

TU Wien | Vienna

Classification: Convex and Integral geometry

We are hiring a PhD student as part of the FWF project "Classification problems for valuations on convex functions" led by Dr. Jonas Knoerr (https://www.fwf.ac.at/en/research-radar/10.55776/PAT4205224). The position is equivalent to a part-time university assistant (30 hours) with a salary of €2.786,10 pre-tax, 14x per year. We are offering the position for up to 3 years starting approximately September/October 2025. The project lies at the intersection of Convex and Integral geometry with connections to a variety of other areas of mathematics. Applicants are encouraged to apply if they have a strong background in one (or more) of the areas of convex geometry, functional analysis, differential geometry, integral geometry, or algebraic geometry. The project will focus on • analytic characterizations of valuations on convex functions, • integral representations for invariant valuations on convex functions, • integral geometric formulas and geometric integral transforms for Monge-Ampère operators. The successful candidate will work on some of the problems connected to the project in collaboration with Jonas Knoerr but is encouraged to develop their own lines of research. A master-equivalent degree in mathematics, physics, computer science, or a closely related field is required by the start date of the position, but not necessary to complete the application. Applications should be submitted to jonas.knoerr@tuwien.ac.at. Please provide: • cover letter (at most two pages) • curriculum vitae (at most two pages) including publications, conference contributions, and other scientific activities if applicable • summary of the diploma/master thesis (at most one page) • transcripts of records Suitable candidates will be contacted for an interview in person/online after reviewing the applications. For questions and general inquiries, please contact jonas.knoerr@tuwien.ac.at.
