PhD position in Mathematics

University of Coimbra and University of Porto | Portugal

Classification: Mathematics

REQUIREMENTS Candidates are required to have completed a degree in Mathematics, or in a related field, of one of the following types: • a Master degree (second cycle of higher studies in the European Union Bologna system); • a Bachelor degree (undergraduate degree of 4 or more years in the pre Bologna system); • any degree legally considered equivalent to one of the above. Applications from candidates that expect to satisfy the previous requirement before the fixed starting date of their doctoral studies within the program are welcome. If accepted, the admission will be conditioned to the completion of one of the required degrees. If the academic degree has been awarded by a foreign institution, its recognition/equivalence to a Portuguese degree might be necessary. Exceptionally, candidates whose scientific, academic and professional curriculum demonstrates ability to pursue doctoral studies may also apply. It is up to the Steering Committee to evaluate whether these special conditions are met. For this purpose, instead of the certificates of qualifications, candidates should include a transcript (official listing of courses already completed and the corresponding grades). APPLICATIONS FOR 2022/23 The application process consists of two steps: 1) From February 1 to March 10, 2022, the deadline for expressions of interest in applying to the Program is open. To formalize the expression of interest, candidates must send the following documents to the email cmuc@mat.uc.pt - elements of the Citizen Card/Passport - updated curriculum vitae - certificates of qualifications - school transcript, containing the classifications obtained in all undergraduate and master's subjects - motivation letter - name and email address of two professors who must write letters of recommendation Both letters of recommendation are mandatory. The letter writers must send them directly to cmuc@mat.uc.pt All documents, including the recommendation letters and the motivation letter, must be written in Portuguese or English. Until March 25, 2022, and after analyzing the expressions of interest, candidates will be informed if they are able to apply on the institutional page of the University of Coimbra and subsequently to enroll in the Program. 2) In a deadline to be announced shortly, the candidates selected in the previous stage must submit their application on the institutional page of the University of Coimbra. The maximum number of students to be admitted in the 2022/23 edition is 25. Note that the acceptance of an application to the Program does not imply the award of a scholarship. The calls for scholarships will take place in autonomous processes. SCHOLARSHIPS In March/April, the calls for the doctoral scholarships will be launched by the Center for Mathematics of the University of Coimbra (CMUC) and the Center for Mathematics of the University of Porto (CMUP). Considering that the number of scholarships offered by CMUC and CMUP are limited, it is advisable that the selected candidates apply to other types of scholarships, in addition to those of the CMUC and CMUP, such as, the FCT scholarships.
