PhD Position in Geometry

University of Innsbruck | Innsbruck (Austria)

Classification:

Are you interested in geometry and the global behaviour of curves and surfaces? Would you like to join an active research group working on a variety of geometric problems? If so, you might be interested in the following open PhD position at the University of Innsbruck. We are hiring a PhD student as part of the FWF project "Embedded isothermic tori from holomorphic maps" (ORCID: 0000-0002-9584-2504). The successful candidate will work closely with Dr. Gudrun Szewieczek and will be part of the "Unit of Geometry and Surveying" at the University of Innsbruck led by Prof. Hans-Peter Schröcker. The position is equivalent to a part-time university assistant (30 Hours, no teaching duties) with a salary of €2.786,10 pre-tax, 14x per year. We are offering this position for up to 2 years, with the possibility of a 1-year extension. Tentative start: September/October 2025. The main goal of the research project is to investigate global questions on isothermic surfaces, an integrable surface class including minimal and constant mean curvature surfaces. As the project lies at the intersection of smooth and discrete differential geometry, the methods employed range from approaches based on integrable systems to elementary geometric constructions in the discrete setup. Applicants are encouraged to apply if they have a strong background and great interest in one (or more) of the areas of smooth and discrete differential geometry, global surface theory, integrable systems and applied geometry. A master-equivalent degree in mathematics, physics, computer science, or a closely related field is required by the start date of the position, but not necessary to complete the application. Applications should be submitted to gudrun.szewieczek@uibk.ac.at. Please provide: • cover letter • curriculum vitae • summary of the diploma/master thesis (at most one page) • contact data of a reference person Suitable candidates will be contacted for an interview in person/online. Application deadline: August 18, 2025. However, interviews will be conducted on a rolling basis upon receipt of applications. For further information and questions, please contact Gudrun Szewieczek via e-mail. Webpages: • Geometry unit: www.uibk.ac.at/de/geometrie-vermessung/ • personal homepage: https://diffgeo.wisz.work/
