The University of Konstanz is one of eleven Universities of Excellence in Germany. Since 2007 it has been successful in the German Excellence Initiative and its follow-up program, the Excellence Strategy. Since January 2021, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation) finances the Collaborative Research Centre (CRC 1432) Fluctuations and Nonlinearities in Classical and Quantum Matter beyond Equilibrium https://www.sfb1432.uni-konstanz.de. Within the CRC 1432, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Konstanz offers a four-years Doctoral Position (part-time 75%, E 13 TV-L) for the CRC-project Impact of noise on the dynamics of non-Markovian systems starting from January 1, 2025. The asymptotic behavior of dynamical systems driven by non-Markovian noise is a very challenging topic and of great interest for physical applications. This project aims to systematically quantify the effects of non-Markovian noise in nonlinear stochastic dynamics with the main focus on bifurcations and noise-induced phenomena such as delay of bifurcations, metastability and chaos. In order to detect, anticipate and calculate the distance towards bifurcation points, we rely on the theory of early warning signs (EWS). We investigate how EWS can be extracted from data obtained in physical experiments and analyze how EWS can be used to detect bifurcations in nanomechanical systems, quantum bifurcations, shear thinning by driven colloids and transitions linked to percolation with anomalous dynamics at critical points. One of the novelties is to incorporate non-Markovian fluctuations into the models including colored noise and fractional Brownian motion. Interested applicants having a strong background in stochastic analysis please contact Prof. Dr. Alexandra Blessing (alexandra.blessing@uni-konstanz.de) by sending a curriculum vitae, transcript of records and a motivation letter. The application deadline is January 30, 2024.
