Department of Mathematics and Systems Analysis is a highly regarded academic community of more than 100 employees, with around 20 professors, 10 lecturers, 20 postdocs, and 45 doctoral candidates. Department of Mathematics and Systems Analysis (http://math.aalto.fi/en/) at the School of Science of Aalto University invites applications for three lecturer positions, one in each of the following fields: 1. Mathematics, 2. Operations Research, and 3. Statistics. The positions will be filled at the University Teacher, University Lecturer, or Senior University Lecturer level of the Aalto University lecturer career system. The positions are full-time and either fixed-term or permanent depending on the candidates’ experience. The positions have competitive salaries, and the employment contracts include occupational health and retirement benefits. The starting date is negotiable but being able to start before 15 August 2023 is considered an advantage. Job requirements Applicants are required to have a doctoral degree in mathematics, operations research, statistics, or a related discipline and fluent command of English. Regarding the position in Mathematics, the ability to teach in Finnish within two years after the appointment is a central requirement since many bachelor’s level courses offered by the department are in Finnish. If an applicant cannot yet teach in Finnish, a credible plan on how a sufficient level of proficiency is reached in two years must be included as an appendix to the application. For the two positions in Operations Research and Statistics, no Finnish proficiency is required. Applicants will be reviewed based on their teaching credentials, pedagogical training and merits, ability to teach, and research achievements as well as activity in the scientific community in relation to their career stage. The central requirements include the ability and enthusiasm to teach relevant courses on the bachelor’s and master’s levels and to instruct theses. Shortlisted applicants will be invited for site visits to present and discuss their teaching and research with the faculty of the department. The evaluation of the applicants follows principles of the Aalto University lecturer career system. University Teacher, University Lecturer, or Senior University Lecturer in the lecturer career system of Aalto University is expected to teach and otherwise advance academic education, to participate in research activities, to pursue pedagogical leadership, and to be an active member of the scientific community. Career advancements on the lecturer career system are based on scheduled performance assessments that account for the candidate’s merits in all these areas.
