Code of Conduct for EMS Events

The Code of Conduct for EMS Events has been approved by the EMS Executive Committee on 16 November 2024 as part of the Code of Ethics of the European Mathematical Society.

The European Mathematical Society (EMS) is committed to providing a safe, inclusive and respectful environment for all participants in its activities, including conferences, workshops, and online events.

Participants should adhere to the values and expectations set out in the of the Code of Ethics of the EMS:

The EMS promotes collaboration and understanding in the mathematical community across Europe and beyond. The EMS is committed to the principles of

  • Respect: treating all members with dignity and consideration.
  • Integrity: upholding the highest standards of honesty and ethical conduct.
  • Diversity and Inclusivity: embracing diversity in all its forms and ensuring equal opportunities for all members.

The EMS trusts that its members will

  • Engage in professional and respectful communication.
  • Foster an inclusive and friendly atmosphere free of harassment and discrimination.
  • Contribute to a collaborative and constructive scholarly community.

Participants should conduct themselves in a way that does not prevent others from obtaining the full scientific benefit from the event. Participants should be aware of cultural, gender and identity-related differences, and the imbalance of power arising from being at different career stages. Courteous conduct to all concerned should be the norm, promoting a welcoming atmosphere that is conducive to scientific exchanges.

The following behaviours are unacceptable:

  • Deliberate disruption of presentations or events, or any form of unruly conduct;
  • Displays of inappropriate objects or pictures;
  • Harassment, intimidation, or discrimination linked to academic career stage, age, culture, disability, ethnicity, gender identity and expression, nationality, physical appearance, religion, sex, or sexual orientation, or any other characteristic;
  • Inappropriate touching;
  • Unauthorised photography, recording or sharing of personal information;
  • Unwelcome advances or stalking;
  • Use of language that makes others uncomfortable, including that which is disrespectful or demeaning to individuals or groups.

The EMS relies on the cooperation of all attendees at EMS events to create a respectful and welcoming atmosphere. We appreciate your help in making EMS events safe and enjoyable for everyone.
