SUMMARY:Hirst Lecture and Society Meeting
DTSTAMP:20260401T014400Z
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20220505
DESCRIPTION:The Hirst Lecture and Society Meeting will comprise of two lect
ures. The first lecture\, 'Maths and the city. A snapshot of numeracy in c
lassical Athens\,' will be given by Serafina Cuomo (Durham). The lecture w
ill explore the various spaces and practices for Athenian numeracy in the
5th and 4th century BCE\, and discuss rates of numeracy\, and also sketch
a profile of who may have been numerate at the time. \n\nThe second lectur
e\, 'Algebraic work with operations in China\, 1st century—13th century'
will be given by the Hirst Prize and Lectureship 2021 winner\, Karine Chem
la (CNRS & Université de Paris). This lecture will explore thirteenth-cent
ury Chinese mathematical works that attest to two interesting innovations:
Qin Jiushao’s Mathematical Work in Nine Chapters (Shushu Jiuzhang 數書九章\,
1247) describes an algorithm solving congruence equations in ways related
to the so-called “Chinese remainder theorem”. Moreover\, Li Ye’ 李冶 Measuri
ng the Circle on the Sea-Mirror (Ceyuan haijing\, 1248) shows how to use p
olynomial algebra to establish algebraic equations solving mathematical pr
oblems. Both authors make use of the same technical expression: “one estab
lishes one heavenly source/origin as… li tian yuan yi wei...” Historians o
f the past have relied on modern interpretations of the texts to draw the
conclusion that\, in the two contexts\, this expression had different tech
nical meanings. Karine Chemla will be interpreting this expression in ligh
t of the ancient Chinese mathematical canon and its commentaries\, an appr
oach that allows us to give the same meaning to the expression and\, more
importantly\, to bring to light a tradition of formal work on operations t
o which a series of Chinese mathematical documents attests. \n\nThe event
will be followed by a wine reception hosted at De Morgan House\, and a Soc
	iety dinner\, at a nearby venue.\n
